Together with only a handful of other European zoos Royal Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem, the Netherlands, takes the lead in breeding square-lipped rhinos. Over the past 18 years 8 rhinos were born in Arnhem; one of them unfortunately stillborn. In 2017 in all European zoos keeping square-lipped rhinos only 11 calves were born in total. In 2016 a European total of 16 births was reached. On March 1st 2018, female calf Naomi was born in Royal Burgers' Zoo.
Seven rhinos in Arnhem
Royal Burgers' Zoo has a fertile adult male and two adult females, which have proved to be successful mothers over the years. A third adult female unfortunately is incapable of breeding. In total, at the moment seven square-lipped rhinos roam the African savannah in Arnhem: one male, three females and three calves in different ages. Of the three calves, one is a male and the other two (including today's birth) are females.
