When the starting signal sounds at 11:00 on Thursday, 28 March 2024, some 30 pupils from groups 7 and 8 of Arnhem's SBO Zuid (De Horizon and De Pirade Elementary School) will commence their search for a golden Easter egg among dozens of chocolate eggs in our new water-themed playground. When the most resourceful prospector discovers the rare treasure, Fun Creek will be considered open.
Fun Creek is located between the entrance to the Bush and the elephants' outdoor enclosure. The new playground is built around a playful creek where young and old can play in and around the water to their hearts' content. Adventurers can try to reach the other side using stepping stones in the water or balancing on tree trunks, or cool down by wading through the water. Calm areas have been created for toddlers to go wild under the supervision of their parents or grandparents.
For anyone who would rather not get their feet wet, the climbing towers and adventurous rope bridges offer a welcome solution: energetic explorers can also swing, scramble and climb high and dry above the gently flowing creek. Once across, they have their pick of multiple slides to take them safely back down. The towers offer children a good view of the elephants' woody outdoor enclosure.
Burgers' Zoo designed and built Fun Creek in cooperation with Speelmaatje, a playground manufacturer from the province of Gelderland. Speelmaatje’s designs focus on playing in and with nature: “We like to incorporate our wooden playground equipment into a green play environment that stimulates children's imagination, allowing them to come up with their own methods of play, time and time again.”
