Michelin has awarded Royal Burgers' Zoo two Michelin stars. The Michelin Travel Guide awards stars to high-quality tourist attractions. Burgers’ Zoo is the only zoo in the Netherlands with such a high rating. The authors of the Michelin Travel Guide rate nine fixed criteria and award up to three stars per attraction.
As it does for restaurants, Michelin aims to assign a clear rating to its selection of tourist attractions using one, two or three stars. These stars are primarily a tool to help travellers easily identify extraordinary attractions and places worth visiting. A two-star rating represents ‘worth a detour’.
The nine fixed and immutable criteria on which Michelin bases its ratings are as follows: first impression, reputation, activities, intrinsic value, labels and certifications to preserve the attraction, beauty/balance/grandeur, charm and warmth, quality of public reception, and quality of the visit.
Royal Burgers' Zoo has been a proud family business since it was founded by Johan Burgers in 1913. The zoo is now run by the fourth generation, with Alex and Bertine van Hooff as directors. Burgers’ Zoo is known internationally for its ‘eco displays’: realistically designed ecosystems where animals often live in great freedom amid thousands of plants. The zoo's main objectives are nature conservation, education, research and recreation.
